Saint Irene Gorge is the second most popular gorge in Crete (about 20 kilometers north of Sougia). Its length is 7,50km and it takes about 2:30 hours to cross. You can go to the entrance of the gorge by taxi from Sougia or by the morning bus that goes to Chania. The route starts from Saint Irene village and ends at the village of Sougia. The route is easy, the largest part is shady and it is part of the E4 trail. It is also part of the NATURA 2000 area.
The whole route is beautiful next to the Aegean River, and there is a shade in its largest part, it is full of different plants such as sage, pine trees, plane trees, carob trees, cypresses etc. Every thousandth kilometer you cross, you write in a metallic sign on wooden pillars.
